  1. Two provinces of NW Iran, Eastern Azerbaijan
  2. (capital Tabriz), population (1986)
  3. 4,114,000, and Western Azerbaijan (capital
  4. Orumiyeh), population 1,972,000.  Azeris in 
  5. Iran as in the USSR, are Muslim (Shi'ite) 
  6. ethnic Turks, descendants of followers of the
  7. Khans from the Mongol Empire. There are about
  8. 5 million in Azerbaijan, and 3 million
  9. distributed in the rest of the country, where
  10. they form a strong middle class. In 1946, 
  11. with Soviet backing, they briefly established
  12. their own republic. Denied autonomy under the
  13. Shah, they rose 1979-80 against the supremacy
  14. of Ayatollah Khomeini and were forcibly 
  15. repressed, although a degree of autonomy was
  16. promised. Since 1988 there has been a growth
  17. in Azer nationalism, spearheaded by the local
  18. Azerbaijani Popular Front and fanned by the
  19. dispute with neighbouring Christian Armenia
  20. over Nagorno-Karabakh  and Nakhichevan.  This
  21. dispute, which reawakened centuries-old
  22. enmities, flared into a war from Dec 1989
  23. which prompted Azer calls for secession from
  24. the USSR and led in Jan 1990 to the despatch
  25. of Soviet troops to Baku in an attempt to
  26. restore order.
